What is Aldixyl® and what is it needed for?

Adrenoleukodystrophy linked to the X chromosome (X-ALD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative metabolic disease caused by mutations in the ABCD1 gene located on the X chromosome. The genetic defect alters the individual's ability to metabolize very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA). These increase in plasma and accumulate in tissues, causing particularly significant damages to the nervous system and to the adrenal glands.

Aldixyl® is the result of current research developments in the treatment therapy areas for Adrenoleukodystrophy and its adult form Adrenomyeloneuropathy. The special pharmaceutical formula gives Aldixyl®, compared to previous products used in ALD and AMN treatments, the ability to overcome the blood-brain barrier by favoring a direct and more effective action on the central nervous system in reducing the accumulation of both VLCFA levels and inflammatory processes.

Aldixyl® is a food for special medical purposes. It is indicated for the treatment of patients with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) and Adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN). Including a daily supply of Aldixyl® in the diet of patients with ALD and AMN allows to reduce the blood rate of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) which are considered the main cause of the neurodegenerative process of Adrenoleukodystrophy and Adrenomyeloneuropathy. From a nutritional point of view, it is nonetheless necessary that the intake of foods containing very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) be reduced. Diets low in VLCFA must be developed by a qualified dietitian.

What is in Aldixyl®?

The efficacy of Aldixyl® is determined by its composition which guarantees the optimal balance between Oleic acid and Erucian acid; by the presence of the conjugated Linoleic acid Triglycerides (TGCLA) which are able to directly exert on the nervous system its regulating action of fat metabolism; and finally by the presence of the exclusive mixture of selected and powerful antioxidants. The production process has made it possible to perfect the pharmaceutical formula by adding substances that reduce oxidative stress.

This innovative combination also allows a clear improvement in patient compliance. Flavoring the product guarantees better palatability. The GTO/GTE mixture (triglycerides esters of the two compounds) is obtained through a delicate process of esterification and purification.

The inviolability of Aldixyl® is ensured through bottles that are suitable to contain the product and prevent sun exposure damage; these are equipped with caps that, thanks to the added rings, ensure a perfect hermetic closure. The bottle is placed in a package designed and developed to preserve the correct preservation of the chemical-physical and organoleptic characteristics of the mixture. The case containing the bottle is designed to prevent exposure to light, which could trigger product deterioration. In addition, the 300 ml format is best suited to ensure the best possible preservation. Thanks to the technology used for product development, care and controls in packaging processes, Aldixyl®'s stability is guaranteed for at least 24 months from the date of production.
