# BMI calculation

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a useful biometric data to calculate a person's ideal body weight based on his/her weight height ratio. BMI is measured by dividing weight (in kilograms) by height (in meters) previously multiplied to the second power. The result falls within one of the ranges in the calculation table:

1. underweight, BMI <18%
2. normal, BMI 18%-24,9%
3. overweight, BMI 25%-29,9%
4. Class 1 obesity (low-risk), BMI 30%-34,9%
5. Class 2 obesity (moderate-risk), BMI 35%-39,9%
6. Class III obesity (high-risk), BMI >40%

These figures however should be seen as indicative only since they do not take into account factors such as sex, age, type of build, percentage of fat and lean mass, as well as other useful data needed to determine a complete picture of a person's health. BMI then is a limited indicator; whose data needs to be read along with a more detailed diagnosis where special needs are concerned. There is no ideal BMI for everyone: for example, a normal body mass index can hide an abnormal distribution of fat in the body, a condition that is as serious as an overweight body mass index.
